Following sell-out performances in 2024, Sketches returns with an exciting new programme that seamlessly bridges the past, present and future of ballet.
Devised by Northern Ballet's Artistic Director, Federico Bonelli, Sketches offers a rare and intimate look into the creative process, stripping ballet down to its rawest form: no sets, no lighting — just movement, music, and pure artistry.
This year’s programme presents innovative new works by artists from Northern Ballet alongside captivating pieces by guest artists. You’ll also hear directly from the choreographers about the inspiration behind their creations. Then, experience timeless elegance and technical brilliance as the performance concludes with an excerpt from the classic ballet Paquita.
Don’t miss this opportunity to witness some of the fresh choreographic voices redefining ballet while also celebrating its legacy.

An Excerpt from Paquita
Originally premiering at the Paris Opera in 1846, Paquita is a Spanish inspired romantic ballet that has become a staple of ballet repertoire. In 1881, Marius Petipa staged a revival of the ballet in Russia, adding the Grand Pas Classique and the Pas de Trois sections in his characteristic style. Petipa’s additions quickly became the most memorable part or the performance, and they are the only fragments of the ballet preserved today.
Music by Ludwig Minkus, Anna Takova-Baynova, Valentina Raicheva, Sofia National Opera Orchestra, Boris Spassov.
